Why Your Website Isn't Converting (And the 7 Fixes That Actually Work)

The average website converts between 1% and 3% of its visitors. The top performing websites in any industry convert at 5–15%. The gap is almost never about traffic volume. It is about what happens after a visitor lands.

Fix 1, Your page loads too slowly

53% of mobile users abandon a page that takes more than 3 seconds to load. For every additional second of load time, conversions drop by an average of 7%. Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights right now. If your score is below 70 on mobile, you are losing customers before they even see your offer.

Fix 2, Your headline does not answer "what's in it for me?"

You have approximately 3–5 seconds to communicate your value proposition before a first time visitor decides whether to keep reading or leave. Most headlines talk about the company. The best headlines talk about the customer's outcome. "We build digital products" tells them nothing. "Launch your SaaS product in 30 days" tells them everything.

Fix 3, You have no social proof above the fold

Trust is earned before action is taken. If the first section of your website is purely about you without client logos, review counts, testimonials, or results you are asking a stranger to trust you with nothing to justify it. Move your strongest proof element into the first screen.

Fix 4, Your CTA is vague or buried

"Learn More" is not a call to action. "Submit" is not a call to action. "Book Your Free Strategy Call" is a call to action. Specificity drives clicks. And your primary CTA should appear in the hero, in the middle of the page, and again at the bottom. Repetition is not annoying it is effective.

Fix 5, Your mobile experience is an afterthought

Globally, over 60% of web traffic is mobile. In Ireland and the UK, that number regularly hits 70–75% for consumer-facing sites. If your website was designed on a desktop and then "made responsive" by a developer as an afterthought, your mobile users are experiencing a compromised version of your brand. Mobile first is not optional.

Fix 6, You are sending paid traffic to your homepage

Your homepage is for browsers. Landing pages are for buyers. If you are running Google or Meta ads and sending that traffic to your homepage, you are paying for attention and then immediately squandering it. Every ad campaign needs a dedicated landing page with a single message, a single offer, and a single call to action. No navigation. No distractions.

Fix 7, You are not testing anything

Most websites are set and forgotten. The highest-converting websites are in a permanent state of testing headlines, CTA copy, button colours, form length, imagery. You do not need to run a complex A/B testing programme from day one. You need to form a hypothesis, change one thing at a time, and measure the result. Improvement is a process, not a project.
